The current Admin. is so full of shit that they can't see truth when it hits them on the head with a freight train. This is just the anti-unpatriotic crap that was spouted during WWII and the Mcarthy era. What we need is to get those reactionary patsies out of the White House and kick their asses back to BFE where they can be with their Aryan Nation brothers and their backwards thinking.
The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that we can say what we will when we will (with limitations along the lines of can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theatre) and there ain't a durned thing the Government can do about it. Now, when would be a good time to criticize the Government according to Fleischer (and the White House for whom he is Press Secretary)? Never. When is a good time to criticize the Government, I ask? As soon as it screws up, or better yet BEFORE it screws up. We need to address the elephant in the room, not talk around it as if it might go tell the herd that we ate all the good leaves and stampede us. I say we need to stand up to those reactionary patsies in Washington D.C. and yell out our opinions and scream the truth at them so that their ears burn with the shame they should feel for trying to shred the Constitution of the United States. If the President asks me to serve in the White House, I would gladly do so and be honoured to do so for the office, not the man. The President should not expect that I will stop my independent thinking and buy on to the current admin's line of bull crap because I never will.
Pure? Hardly. Do I understand the point purportedly being made? Yes. I also understand the hatred underlying it and reject it.
Do tell.
It IS our responsibility to not offend people when it won't impact what the end result will be. It's called politeness.
My word it has not. The fact that we accept peoples from all cultures helps form our identity. "Give us your tired, your hungry, your poor, your teeming masses yearning to breathe free" Are these words saying, "If they are Christian and speak English only"? I think not. Just the opposite. We were founded by people looking for freedom to explore their own religions because they were suppressed, and sometimes killed, for what they believed. Americans are still killed for what we represent by those who are afraid of such freedoms.
True, to a point. Thing is, all of this is ours because we do not tell people they can't have theirs within our borders.
Wounded Knee, the Trail of Tears, Okeefenokee Swamp, Gettysburg, Amistad ... Our forefathers were not only the western Europeans, but also Asians, Africans, and other indigenous peoples outside Europe.
Wrong. We speak every language in the world (practically). English is just our most common language. There is no official/state language in the USA. The paragraph preceding this one is extremely against what America stands for, not for it. I am disappointed in you if you actually believe what it says, which I am led to believe as you sent it without added comments.
Pushed through Congress during the Red Scare. Previously it was E Pluribus Unum - Of Many, One. I do not accept "In God We Trust" as my motto, nor as my country's motto.
Hamurabi's Code was carved in stone, but do we still cut off a hand for theft?
This is also incorrect.
Not so. Since it is legal for women to go topless on The Mall (home of many of our most revered monuments) should they also go around dressed so in the schools?
Nope. The Creator does not specify a specific type of religion. "God" does where "god" does not.
Not even close. Easter, Good Friday, and Christmas are not national holidays. Some states and the banks recognize them, however it is more because their business would practically dry up and most of their staff would not be in for work due to religious observations.
Hmm... do the Muslim turn to the Christian God? Do the Hebrew? Do the Buddhist? The Taoist? ...
It is part of the Christian culture, but not America as a whole. This paragraph devotes the USA to religious intolerance by not including those who wish to worship outside the Christian way.
Most Americans actually do not participate in these holidays publicly if at all.
Not really. I hope she tries to do it during a Supreme Court session when they are hearing cases. Our freedom of speech has limits, but they are broader than most, if not all, other nations around the world.
This is so narrow sighted. Is our current way of life the same as it was in 1783? As in 1883? Or even 1983? No, it is not and tomorrow it'll be different than it was yesterday.
Within reason. You do still need parade permits and the like for certain activities.
I'll not leave and you cannot make me do so. I will complain, curse, encourage, disparage, applaud anything to my heart's content as is my right, yet I still don't have to leave. If I think something is wrong with this country, I have the right to speak up about it and then to work toward fixing it. I don't have to leave if it doesn't go my way.
Not likely. I can't think of a single country where speaking English is a death sentence, like speaking Trukese isn't here. Many countries have actually patterned their governments after ours. Military dictatorships or roving bands or revolutionaries are notoriously more restrictive, but many of the world's countries would rather deport you than imprison or execute you.
I, for one, do not.
Ah, but Patriotism isn't tied to a flag or a single religious deity.
I won't pass it on without my comments attached.
It is always time to take a stand against intolerance.
Amen.
