From: Shefali Asthana Subject: Remembrances of Things Past... (long) Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 19:02:02 -0400 Okay, here are some of the lines from the current trilogy that refer to the past. Should they refer to things in the prequels? If so, how should they be handled? ANH: THREEPIO: Vaporators! Sir -- My first job was programming binary load lifter...very similar to your vaporators. You could say... LUKE: Well, I stumbled across a recording while I was cleaning him. He says he belongs to someone called Obi-Wan Kenobi. LUKE: I thought he might have meant old Ben. Do you know what he's talking about? Well, I wonder if he's related to Ben. OWEN: That old man's just a crazy old wizard. Tomorrow I want you to take that R2 unit into Anchorhead and have its memory flushed. That'll be the end of it. It belongs to us now. LUKE: But what if this Obi-Wan comes looking for him? OWEN: He won't, I don't think he exists any more. He died about the same time as your father. LUKE: He knew my father? OWEN: I told you to forget it. AUNT BERU: Owen, he can't stay here forever. Most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him. OWEN: I'll make it up to him next year. I promise. AUNT BERU: Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him. OWEN: That's what I'm afraid of. BEN: Well of course, of course I know him. He's me! I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since oh, before you were born. LUKE: No, my father didn't fight in the wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter. BEN: That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals. Thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved. LUKE: You fought in the Clone Wars? BEN: Yes, I was once a Jedi Knight the same as your father. LUKE: I wish I'd known him. BEN: He was the best star-pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. I understand you've become quite a good pilot yourself. And he was a good friend. Which reminds me... I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damned-fool idealisticcrusade like your father did. BEN: An elegant weapon for a more civilized time. For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire. LUKE: How did my father die? BEN: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force. LEIA: General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. LUKE: He says it's the best he can do. Since the XP-38 came out, they're just not in demand. VADER: A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master. TARKIN: The Jedi are extinct, their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion. VADER: I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master VADER: You should not have come back. _________ ESB: BEN: There you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me. LUKE: Still...there's something familiar about this place. I feel like...I don't know... EMPEROR: The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi. CREATURE: Ah, your father. Powerful Jedi was he, powerful Jedi, mmm. YODA: Hmmm. Much anger in him, like his father. BEN'S VOICE: Was I any different when you taught me? YODA: Ready, are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. YODA: This one a long time have I watched. YODA: If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice. VADER: You are beaten. It is useless to resist. Don't let yourself be destroyed as Obi-Wan did. VADER: If you only knew the power of the dark side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father. LUKE: He told me enough! He told me you killed him. VADER: No. I am your father. __________ ROTJ: BEN: You father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I have told you was true... from a certain point of view. BEN: When I first knew him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong. LUKE: Leia... do you remember your mother? Your real mother? LEIA: Just a little bit. She died when I was very young. LUKE: What do you remember? LEIA: Just...images, really. Feelings. LUKE: Tell me. LEIA: She was very beautiful. Kind, but...sad. LUKE: The Force is strong in my family. LUKE: I've accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father. VADER: That name no longer has any meaning for me. VADER: Obi-Wan once thought as you do. EMPEROR: It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your father, are now mine! VADER: Sister! So...you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her, too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. LUKE: Never! I'll never turn to the dark side. You've failed, Your Highness.
