You asked for it! "One man and his Ysalamiri" Luke gazed into the little creature's eyes, but could find no clue as to what allowed it to repell the Force. The very idea seemed incredible to him - since the Force flowed through ALL living things, how could the Ysalamiri live without it? He had got well out of his way to procure the animal, to a trading outpost on a space station near Myrkr. He was sure that solving this mystery would enable him and his students to better understand the nature of the Force. How could he bring the Jedi Order back if he didn't know how a small arboreal rodent could repell the Force? The creature stared back at him, and it's dark little eyes slowly closed. A few seconds later Luke stretched his arms above his head and yawned. He had studied the creature for hours, but still its powers made no sense. But something was different now. Luke stretched his mind his time, not his muscles - and found that he could feel the Force again! He was still beside the Ysalamir - but it was asleep ... Of course! The creature couldn't "repell" the Force - that was impossible! But it could USE the Force! It consciously denied any nearby Force user the use of his or her Force powers. But why would such a creature evolve? The Force evaporated as the Ysalamir's eyes snapped open. It must have heard something it though was a threat - but what? A low growl came from the other side of the door. Vornskrrs! The trader the Ysalamiri had come from had mentioned it to him - a religious cult bought up all his Vornskrrs, and they had wanted Ysalamiri - Luke had been lucky to get the first one in stock, because if the cult had called back again there would have been none left. The trader had pointed at a nearby slogan, "R YEW A KRIS-CHUCK", and warned Luke to be wary of strangers. The cult were fanatics - but what did they want Vornskrrs and Ysalamiri for? There was a knock on the cabin door. Luke declined to answer it, and instead reached for his lightsaber. Then the door exploded. An armoured figure stepped through the smoking hole in the door, and fired his E-11 blindly. Luke deflected the blaster bolts with his saber, one of the shots hit the attacker in the face. He slumped down lifelessly, but someone behind him continued to fire into the room. The door swung open, and two more armoured warriors entered. They each brandished a vibro-axe, and they looked like they knew how to use them. Luke stepped away from the Ysalamir, out of range of the Ysalamir's powers. The two warriors attacked simultaneously. It was obvious that they had trained together - their movements were expertly coordinated. One would keep him busy while the other attacked his flank. Luke decided to disrupt their tactics. He moved back into the corner of the room, and as they came at him he swung his lightsaber at them. They hesitated, only for a second, and in that second they were lost. Luke's next swing took one's arm off at the wrist, while the other recieved a swift kick in the kneecap followed by a similar disarming. The two men howled in pain, and tried to stagger out of the room. Two blaster shots rang out, and they fell to the floor. One of them knocked over the Ysalamir's nutrition frame, and it tumbled down on top of him. A crazy, wild-eyed figure stood in the doorway, smoking blaster in one hand, the leash of two slavering Vornskrrs in the other. "Are you Luke Skywalker?" "Yes." "Then die!" The figure let loose with the Vornskrrs and a volley of shots simultaneously. Luke deflected the shots back towards their sender, who ducked for cover. Then he turned his attention to the Vornskrrs. The first one leapt at him, and he cut it down in mid-air, then side-stepped the flying body. The second one closed its jaws around the squealing Ysalamiri - Luke cut its head off, and the Ysalamir fell free. Then another couple of blaster shots knocked his lightsaber from his hand, and sent him sprawling into the corner of the room. The figure walked into the room, blaster levelled at Luke's head, and kicked the Ysalamir's frame onto Luke's chest. Luke was trapped physically, his Force powers gone, and his lightsaber lay between the cultist's feet. He realised the end was nigh for him. "Why ... why are you doing this?" he gasped. "You have a sister - a twin sister." "Yes, I do ..." "Then you have no soul! You are both of the same flesh - like clones! How can the same flesh have two souls? You are an abomination, Skywalker - you must die!" As the cultist squeezed his trigger, Luke raised his hand high above his head and reached out with the Force. He ignited his saber, and brought it to his hand. There was a wet thump as the cultist fell in two different pieces. Luke deactivated his saber, and scratched the Ysalamir under the chin. It purred. They might make good pets - quiet, clean, low-maintenance, and definitely smart enough to know when someone was their friend. FIN.
