Bantha
Bantha

Banthas are large, quadrapredal herbivores that are highly adapted to plains environments. Adults stand approximately 2 to 3 meters in height at the shoulder. Male banthas have a pair of spiral horns which grow from their skulls. They are highly adaptable creatures which can survive in climates ranging from desert to tundra. One aspect of their adaptability to harsh climates is that they can survive for weeks without any food or water. Researchers have been unable to determine the banthas planet of origin. Yet, banthas have existed on at least twelve planets since prehistoric times and virtually everyone of those planets insists that it is the homeworld of the bantha. Another attribute of the bantha's success is that they have few natural enemies. For example, the only natural enemy of the bantha on Tatooine is the krayt dragon. On many planets, herders raise banthas for food and clothing and they also make excellent beasts of burden due to their size, strength, and adaptability. Domesticated banthas are most coveted and well-guarded possessions. Moisture farmers and Sand People protect banthas from krayt dragons and other hazards of Tatooine. The relationship between banthas and Sand People are very unique, no other bantha and an intelligent species has banded so closely together. Surprisingly, at least to some, banthas have even inspired a religion. Priests of the Dim-U religion are devoted to the mystery of the bantha. Priests and followers believe that a great message of universal importance has been hidden in the bantha, and once the mystery is solved, an incredible age of peace and bounty will begin.

Dewback
Dewback

Dewbacks are large, lizard-like omnivores which are native to Tatooine. Adults stands approximately 2 to 3 meters in height at the shoulder. They are highly active during the warm daylight hours and quite sluggish during the night. Thier coloration ranges from gray & brown to dull red & blue. Also, camouflage colorations are quite common among dewbacks. They dig through dunes in search of scrub, small animals, or moisture. Dewbacks are solitary animals except during their mating season which occurs once per year in the Jundland Wastes. When mating ends, females lay clutches of eggs by the thousands, then return to their solitary lives until the next mating season. Half a year later, during the womp rat migration the eggs hatch and the young dewbacks must survive the Jundland Wastes without any aid from the elder dewbacks. Most dewbacks are wild, yet some have been domesticated and used as riding beasts. Local authorities often use them as patrol animals since they are faster and more agile than banthas. There is little chance of establishing a domesticated line of dewbacks since dewbacks held in captivity will not breed. However, most owners take their chances and allow the dewbacks to leave and participate in their annual mating ritual. Most of the released dewbacks return to their owners once their mating season is complete. Many of Tatooine's moisture farmers have adopted dewbacks as pets and they reutrn the affection of their masters. Dewbacks serve as a source of food for the krayt dragon and they also provide food and material for Sand People.

Krayt Dragon
Krayt Dragon

Krayt Dragons are very large, carnivorous, reptillian-like creatures which are native to Tatooine. They live in the mountains surrounding the Jundland Wastes. Krayt dragons are considered to be the top predator on Tatooine. However, not much else is known about the krayt dragon. This is primarily because the krayt dragon is very reclusive. Also, due to the aggressive nature of the krayt dragon, it is rather foolish to go searching for this elusive predator because the odds are heavily against surviving a personal encounter with one of these creatures.

Ronto"
Ronto

Rontos are large, 4.25 meters tall, pack animals that generally have a gentle temperament and are well known for their strength and loyalty. They have an excellent sense of smell, which more than makes up for their poor eyesight, that allows them to detect a krayt dragon from a kilometer away. Also, rontos are large enough that their presence has been known to frighten off Sand People. However, they are easily startled by urban traffic which leads to most owners keeping them out of locales such as Mos Eisley.

Sarlacc
Sarlacc

The sarlacc is located at the bottom of the Pit of Carkoon in the Dune Sea. It is an omnivorous creature which has a diameter of approximately 3 meters. It is lined with three rows of inward-pointing, razor sharp teeth. The body of the sarlacc is buried deep beneath the sand and it may be as large as 100 meters in length. The sarlacc uses tongue-like tentacles to grab prey from the surface and drag them down into its gaping maw. The highly unstable and shifting sands of the Pit of Carkoon supplies most of the sarlacc's prey. If a creature slips into the pit, it rarely is able to escape without assistance from someone or something outside of the pit. Any type of frenzied struggle to get out of the pit only serves to notify the sarlacc of the presence of prey and the struggle also sends the prey closer to the sarlacc. The sarlacc has a highly effective digestive system which allows prey to be digested over extremely long periods of time and allows it to store prey until sustenance is needed. Local legend states that digestion takes approximately one thousand years.

Scurriers

Scurriers are small animals, up to 1.2 meters long, which scour the Wastes in search of food. They tend to break into smaller groups when they search populated areas for food. In Mos Eisley, they are considered to be nuisance because they move from garbage pile to garbage pile in search of food and they have a tendency to take whatever they can for their nests. While scurriers usually flee at the sign of a threat, they will defend their territory, particularly their nests, with a combination of high-pitched squeals, loud snorts, and/or rather painful bites.

Womp Rat
Womp Rat

Womp Rats are carnivorous, rodent-like creatures which are indigenous to Tatooine. The majority of their body is covered in fur and they are approximately 3 meters long from their nose to the tip of their tail. Womp Rats are very vicious and use their claws and teeth to bring down prey. They inhabit the canyons of Tatooine in groups of varying sizes. Womp Rats were the favorite target of Luke Skywalker when he piloted his T-16.

Worrt
Worrt

Worrts are carnivorous creatures that inhabit the most remote wilderness areas of Tatooine. They are approximately .5 to 1.5 meters tall and are not very intelligent. They will attack anything which remotely appears edible. This includes metal, plants, and large rocks that appear similar to other creatures and they will also attack just about anything that passes in front of it or that it can approach without being attacked first. However, worrts are harmless to humans. They typically feed on insects, small rodents, and other various tiny creatures. They have also been known to harass larger creatures, especially if the creatures put up no resistance to the worrt's advances.
